Huomenna se taas koittaa: Suomen itsenäisyyspäivä. Kuinka vanha on itsenäisyys? Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen nettisivulla kysymyksiä ja vastauksia sanojen alkuperästä kerrotaan, että suomenkielen sanasta itsenäisyys on kirjallisia tietoja vuodesta 1841 lähtien. Tällöin Sanan Saattaja Viipurista -lehdessä S. Hilponen käytti sanaa itsenäisyys.Laajempaan tietoisuuteen sana nousi Volmari Kilpisen käyttämänä kuutisen vuotta myöhemmin.
Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen sivuilla jatketaan aiheesta, että Itsenäisyys on johdettu adjektiivista itsenäinen, jonka Elias Lönnrot sepitti vuonna 1836. Vanha suomalais-ugrilainen sana itse on molempien sanojen pohjana. Sanan itse alkuperäinen merkitys lienee ollut ’varjo’ tai ’varjosielu’ kertoo Kotimaisten kielten keskus, koska tähän viittaavat sanan ugrilaiskielten vastineiden merkitykset.
Kehityspsykologiassa Itsenäisyys tarkoittaa riippumattomuutta toisten ihmisten huolenpidosta ja valmiutta päättää itse omista asioistaan. (Tämä selitys löytyy Wikipediasta sanalla itsenäisyys.) Muistathan, kuinka vahvana pienellä lapsella viriää oma tahto. Se ei olekaan pieni asia vaan kuten valtion itsenäisyys, se on valtava asia. Ja niin kuin pieni lapsi ei ensin osaa käyttää omaa tahtoaan ystävällisesti ja harkiten, ei vastasyntynyt valtiokaan usein selviä ilman isompiakin kuhmuja ja kahnauksia.
Ehkä seuraavaa kohtaa ei enää voi suoraan rinnastaa ihmisten ja valtioiden välillä. Määritelmä näet jatkuu, että ”vanhempien täytyy luoda perusta turvallisille rajoille, jolloin taaperon on sallittava itsenäisyyden kehittymisen kannalta pitää kiinni vaatimuksistaan, milloin taas vanhemman sanaa on toteltava, koska lapsen on oman turvallisuutensa takia toimittava kuten vanhempi vaatii.” Kuitenkin turvalliset rajat ovat aika olennainen asia tälle kotimaallemme Suomi, joka nyt 6.12. viettää taas syntymäpäiviään.
Loppuun kokosin vielä Wikipediasta erilaisia itsenäisyyttä tarkoittavia sanoja. Kyllä se on kaunis sana kaikilla kielillä!

Tomorrow it will come again: Finland’s Independence Day . How old is independency ? On the website of the Center for Finnish Languages, questions and answers about the origin of the words states that the Finnish word independency has been written information since 1841. In the journal The Messenger from Vyborg S. Hilponen used the word itsenäisyys for the first time. In wider consciousness the word rose when Volmari Kilpinen used it some six years later.
The webpages of the Center for Domestic Languages continue on the topic that Independency is derived from the adjective Independent , coined by Elias Lönnrot in 1836. The old Finno-Ugric word itself is the basis of both words. The original meaning of the word itself may have been ’shadow’ or ’shadow soul’, says the Center for Domestic Languages, as this is indicated by the meanings of the word’s Ugric counterparts.
In developmental psychology, independency means independence from the care of other people and a willingness to decide for oneself. (This explanation can be found on Wikipedia with the word independency.) Remember how strong a small child is with his own will. It is not a small thing but, like the independency of the state, it is a huge thing. And just as a small child does not at first know how to use his own will kindly and thoughtfully, the newborn state often does not survive without even bigger bumps and run-ins.
Perhaps the next point can no longer be directly equated between people and states. The definition goes on to say that ”parents must lay the foundations for safe boundaries , in which case the toddler must be allowed to adhere to his demands for the development of independency, or when the parent’s word must be obeyed because the child needs to be safe.” However, secure borders are a pretty essential thing for our home country, Finland, which now 6.12. celebrates her birthdays again.
In the end, I gathered various words from Wikipedia that mean independency. Yes, it is a beautiful word in all languages!
